What is an Impacted Tooth?

An impacted tooth is a tooth that hasn’t made an appearance at the right time in your dental development. Something is keeping it from breaking through your gums and settling into its correct position. There are many known causes of tooth impaction, but sometimes this condition happens without reason.

  • Excessive Soft Tissue / Gum Tissue
  • The Tooth Is Growing At An Angle
  • Tooth Crowding
  • A Small Jaw
  • Genetics

Impacted Tooth Pain & Other Symptoms

Impacted teeth can often come as a surprise after a dental x-ray because they have caused you no trouble. At other times, however, symptoms start popping up that clue you into the fact that there is a problem.

These symptoms are especially important to look out for in children and teens whose growing teeth make them more likely to experience impacted tooth problems.

  • Red, Swollen Gums That May Bleed
  • An Unpleasant Taste In Your Mouth
  • Pain Or Difficulty When Opening Your Mouth
  • Pain When You Are Chewing
  • Bad Breath

Impacted Canines & Wisdom Teeth

Children can have issues with impacted canines because these are the last front teeth to grow in. Maybe the rest of the teeth are crowding the canine, making it difficult for this tooth to break through. Sometimes a baby tooth is still in the way. Your canines usually appear around the age of 13.

Teens are more likely to experience issues with impacted wisdom teeth for two reasons. These are the last four teeth to grow in around the ages of 17 to 21. By then the jaw has often stopped growing. So there is no space for these last new teeth to grow in.

A Little Tooth Can Cause Big Problems

Impacted teeth whether they are wisdom teeth, canines, or appear somewhere else along the dental arch are more than a cosmetic or painful nuisance. A tooth that doesn’t break through the surface is left to wreak havoc underneath your gums and alongside the roots of other, healthy teeth.

  • Causes Healthy Teeth To Move In Unhealthy Ways
  • Causes Tooth & Bone Damaging Cysts
  • Interferes With Roots Of Other Teeth
  • Crowds Nearby Teeth
  • Increases Likelihood Of Gum Disease
  • Can Cause Cavities, Infection & Decay

Don’t Let Impaction Derail Your Dental Health

Fortunately, there are many tooth impaction treatments that can be performed by your dentist, oral surgeon, or orthodontist. Depending on the level of impaction and location of the tooth, treatments can range from extraction (removal) to a wait and watch approach to make sure the impacted tooth won’t just come in late or stick around without causing problems.

  • Wait & Watch, More Common With Impacted Canines
  • Extracting Baby Teeth
  • Surgically Exposing The Tooth
  • Braces & Other Orthodontic Procedures
  • Expanding The Jaw
  • Oral Surgery To Remove The Tooth

Preventing Problems With Your Teeth

The best way to relieve pain or prevent problems relating to a partially impacted or impacted tooth is to know how your teeth are developing. Regular dental checkups keep your x-rays current. So, if a problem does appear, it can be treated before it becomes a big one.
