The Safest Way To Whiten Your Teeth

Whiter Teeth Las Vegas

Most likely you see commercials on television or ads on the internet promoting products to whiten your teeth. Many seem like a great alternative to professional whitening treatments, and some may be safe to use occasionally. Sadly, most of these products will do little to whiten your teeth, and some can be harmful to your teeth and gums.

Whitening Toothpaste

Most toothpaste brands offer products that claiming that their use will brighten your smile. They advertised the ability to remove stains from coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco products.

You should know that most of these products contain abrasive agents. These abrasives will remove surface stains and make your smile seem whiter because stains are removed. This seems like good news.

Here’s the bad news. Whitening toothpaste will only work to whiten your teeth a shade or two at best. The abrasives in toothpaste, like baking soda and silica, can damage the enamel of your teeth. Using an abrasive agent is similar to cleaning your teeth with sandpaper. You would never do that. Whitening toothpaste can also cause gum irritation and sensitivity to heat or cold.

DIY Whitening Foods

You may have heard that lemon and strawberries are safe, natural alternatives to whiten your teeth. It would be fabulous if this were the case. A study conducted in 2012 concluded that the high content of citric acid in these foods contributes to the erosion of tooth enamel. Further tests found that teeth were up to 10% softer after using these foods. Also, brushing with lemon or strawberries did not whiten teeth.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Since many products approved by the American Dental Association do contain hydrogen peroxide, it is logical to assume that using this product on its own is a safe alternative. It is even shown by some sources on the internet as a safe whitening method.

It’s not. Many dentists advise their patients not hydrogen peroxide to whiten their teeth at home. Hydrogen peroxide, used incorrectly, can cause gum irritation and tooth sensitivity, but that’s not the worst scenario. Hydrogen peroxide can enter through the enamel of your teeth straight to the dentin and destroy living cells. If you are going to use a peroxide product, be sure to speak to your dentist about the effectiveness and safety before attempting to whiten with peroxide on your own.

Whitening Mouthwash and Rinses
These dual-purpose solutions can be useful for killing germs in your mouth, but are not very effective for whitening your teeth. They contain hydrogen peroxide, but most mouth rinses contain such a small amount of peroxide that little whitening occurs. They are not in the mouth long enough to have a whitening effect.

For a whiter, brighter, healthy smile, talk to your dentist about in-office whitening and take-home options. Your dentist understands that you want the whitest smile possible, but also wants your teeth to stay healthy and resilient.
