A crown is essentially a cap that is designed in the shape of your tooth to cover it up and restore its appearance. They are designed to fully enclose the tooth from your gums to make sure that no further decay occurs. At Nevada Dentistry and Braces in Las Vegas, NV, our dental professionals may suggest a crown to fix the following dental issues:

  • It can be used to help protect a tooth that is broken. Crowns can easily hold together a cracked tooth and keep it from decaying or breaking any further.
  • It can restore the cosmetic look of a worn down or a chipped tooth. A crown will cover up the flaw in your tooth and make it look more pleasing.
  • It can be used to cover up an implant, a filling, or a discolored tooth that you may have in your mouth.
  • A crown can also be used to help save a child’s tooth from further decay so that they do not lose their baby teeth too soon.

Types of Crowns

Our Las Vegas, NV location uses a few different types of crowns. Typically, a crown will last about ten to 15 years in your mouth, but the type of material that it is crafted from will determine how long it will last. You will also need to take habits like grinding your teeth, biting your nails, and chewing on ice and hard candy into consideration. Let’s take a look at a few of the most common materials that crowns are made from.

  • Stainless steel crowns are often used as a temporary cosmetic dentistry fix. If your child needs a crown on their baby teeth, then this type of crown is what your child’s dentist is most likely to recommend.
  • Metal crowns include gold, nickel, and a few other alloys. They are a durable option that often lasts longer than the other types of crowns that are offered. They rarely see damage while in your mouth, which makes them a great option for the teeth that are in the back of your mouth.
  • Crowns that are designed with porcelain that is fused to metal are great for durability and aesthetics. No one in Las Vegas wants to have a silver crown on their front teeth, so this option gives you a crown that matches the other teeth in your mouth. The porcelain is not as durable as the metal of these crowns, so you will have to be careful that you do not chip them.
  • All resin crowns are another option that gives you tooth colored cosmetic options. They look great in your mouth, but they tend to be more fragile than other crown options.
  • Ceramic and porcelain crowns are the most natural colored option that you will find, but they do wear a bit more than other materials. Our general dentist often suggests these crowns for individuals who have allergies to metal.

Additional Care

Once you leave our Las Vegas office, you may notice a bit of sensitivity around the crown. Since the nerve of the tooth is still under the cap, you may experience sensitivity to hot and cold foods, so our general dentist recommends using toothpaste that is designed to reduce sensitivity in teeth. Special oral care is not required to take care of your new crown, you still need to brush at least twice a day and make sure to floss around the crown as well as around your other teeth. Use mouthwash as well to help ensure that food does not enter into the crown and cause further tooth decay.
