What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation Dental ProcedureEach year millions of Americans put off appointments or avoid dental care completely because of their phobias, according to the Dental Organization For Conscious Sedation. If you are one of these people, sedation dentistry is your ticket to calmness. Our dentists may use several methods depending on the personal needs of each patient:

  1. Laughing Gas
  2. Enteral Sedation
  3. IV Sedation
  4. General Anesthesia

1) Laughing Gas & How It Works

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, eases pain and anxiety without putting you to sleep. We administer nitrous oxide gas with a machine that delivers the gas through a comfortable facial mask.

2) Conscious Oral Sedation

Also known as enteral sedation, this method involves oral medications that will make you extremely drowsy and tired. Sometimes we combine this method with laughing gas to give you an even more peaceful experience.

Although you will be relaxed and feel no pain, you will still be able to hear and respond if our dentists ask you to move your head.

3) Intravenous (IV) Sedation

This procedure begins with a qualified technician starting an IV in a vein in your arm. Through this IV, you will receive a constant flow of sedative medicine, keeping you sedated while we work on your teeth.

4) General Anesthesia

This method combines intravenous medicine with inhaled gas. You will be in a sleep-like condition to keep you from feeling any pain. A trained anesthesiologist will perform the injection and monitor your vitals throughout the appointment.

Before & After Dental Sedation

Sedation Dental ProcedureYou may need to fast before your dental procedure. With the exception of the laughing gas method, you will need someone to drive you home afterward. You may also need someone to keep an eye on you for a few hours while you are beginning to wake up. We will give you all the details of before and aftercare.

Reduce The Anxiety Of Long Visits

Whichever method we use, sedation dentistry will allow you to relax during your appointment. You will feel that the time flew by with no pain. This makes sedation a good option for more lengthy procedures such as:

Worry-Free Dental Visits

Knowing that sedation dentistry is an option can make a big difference as you plan regular dental visits. You may find that you are more likely to make routine appointments if you are not dreading the possibility of a long and painful procedure in the future.
